Holidays Our little holiday diary

Fuerteventura 2015

Diane decided that we both needed a break and after a fairly quick chat about it we settled for February to try and catch a little sunshine. We also agreed that we should just go by ourselves and try to get some peace and quiet. It was a choice between Spain and the Canary Islands. Having been to Tenerife a couple of times, Fuerteventura was to us, a good alternative.

Monday February 9th 2015.
Picked up at 3.30 am by taxi and a nice smooth trip to Manchester Airport. Straight through security and a faultless flight. We had booked flight, car hire and hotel through the Travel Republic Agency. According to their paperwork, our hire car was with Travel Jigsaw Car Rentals. After a frustrating half hour walking up and down the main hall and calling at all the car rental offices, IMGA0023nobody had ever heard of Travel Jigsaw Car Rentals. In desperation I phoned The Travel Agency and a very rude operator told me it was Budget Car Rentals. (When I checked my paperwork later, I should have printed off a separate voucher stating it WAS Budget Car Rentals, Whoops!!!) More wandering up and down the airport concourse trying to find the Budget Car Rental office. Eventually, I found a very small Budget sign in the corner of an Avis office window. Lo and behold, success. I think that Budget is a poor relation of Avis!! Not to worry, being a Sanderson, I had ordered the cheapest car I could find. I turned out to be a 1.0ltr Skoda City Go. It looked a tiny IMGA0004little thing, but it turned out to be remarkably roomy considering I’m rather tall. (A big fat lump springs to mind). Off to find our hotel which turned out to be just 10 minutes drive down the road. We checked in to the Hotel La Casita in Castillo Caleta De Fusto. A very nice, small hotel, fairly basic but clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. After checking in and dumping our luggage, we headed off to explore and have something to eat (Chinese of course). Back to the hotel, few drinks and then bed. Not a bad start to the holiday.

Tuesday February 10th 2015.

Had a late start today after catching up on our sleep. We had spotted the British Corner Restaurant yesterday so we decided to give it a try. Had “Full English Breakfast”. Not very impressed and,IMGA0033 we thought, expensive for what we got. Not to worry, we were going exploring today so headed up to the very top of the island via the coast road to Corralejo. Not a great deal to see so we didn’t linger too long. Next on the list was El Cottilo (the White Beach) and Lighthouse on the North West coast. From there we headed back across and down country via Lajares, La Oliva, Puerto del Rosario and back to Caleta del Fusto. We parked the car outside the hotel and wandered some 500 yaqrds or so to theAberdeen Steak House. An excellent choice, first class food, great service and very competitive prices. We’ll be back. A very pleasant wander back to the hotel, a few drinks and so to bed.

Wednesday February 11th 2015

IMGA0083Obviously we had to go back to the Aberdeen Steakhouse for breakfast. Not disappointed. After conducting one of our famous carefully planned trips we set off across the middle of the Island, going via Antigua, Tuineje, Pajara, Betancuria, Castillas del Angela and back to the hotel. Well…. That was the plan. In typical Sanderson fashion, I made a right cock-up as I drove the wrong way round so missing out Ajoy and Puerte de la Pona. Not to worry, a cheap Chinese meal to look forward to. After walking down to the Chinese restaurant, it had closed down and just to finish everything off, it started raining. What a day!! Never mind, it was an enjoyable drive.

Thursday February 12th 2015

Hotel buffet breakfast this morning because we are going down to Morro Jable for a round of golf on the Jandia Golf Course. This is way down at the bottom of the island. We found it eventually andIMGA0106 booked for just 9 holes, club hire and buggy. We are not good golfers but even we found this to be a terrible course. It was in appalling condition, which didn’t help us to play. After we left the course, I checked the receipt and it seemed they only charged us €11.50. Just about right I thought and cheered up straight away. While we were down there, we thought we would check out the Turtle Sanctuary. You’ve guessed it, it was closed. Next stop Tarajalejo, supposed to be an old fashioned fishing village. Yes, rubbish. It’s turning into another one of those days so we headed back up to the hotel. Just to finish off the day, the golf club had been in touch with them to say that we still owed them €110.00. What an end to the day!!

Friday February 13th 2015

We thought we would play safe today considering the date, so all we did was a bit of shopping. Ate at the Aberdeen Angus again of course, had a few drinks and early to bed.

Saturday February 14th 2015

We had heard about a fish foot massage centre (Like they have in Tenerife) so decided to give it a try. Yep!! Closed. Wandered round the bay instead. We heard drumming and being by nature, nosey, we followed the sounds. It was a local carnival parade, not very big but enjoyable. Back down to the bay for a half hour sail in a glass bottomed boat. We were the only ones on it. We were as bored the “skipper”. After dining we went back to the hotel and had an early night.

Sunday February 14th 2015

IMGA0198Diane had been told about a famous painter who was exhibiting in a market up in Corralejo so off we went to investigate. Couldn’t find him but had a nice stroll round the market. Back to Puerta de Rosario where we had heard about a floating carnival. Yipee!! We found it and it was very good. Few pics and videos. Back to hotel and started packing.

Monday February 15th 2015

Had early breakfast before taking the hire car back. Budget Car Rentals are a rip off. They charge you for a full tank of fuel even though we only used half a tank.

Summary.
In spite of what I have said here, we both agree that it was one of our best holidays. Just the two of us, very peaceful and going where we wanted when we wanted. It is also a very easy island to enjoy. The pace of life here suited us both.
